How it’s done

Cleared from the ground, not off a ladder

A gutter vacuum on carbon poles reaches the gutter line from your driveway. Nothing leans on the house, nobody goes on the roof, and there are no ladder feet pressing into your border or your render.

The whole run, both sides

Front and back, plus the bits over conservatories and porches that ladders can’t safely reach. Moss, leaves, roof grit and whatever the birds left behind.

Downpipes checked

A clear gutter that empties into a blocked downpipe still floods. I check the pipes run before I pack up — there is not much point doing one without the other.

Cleared up after

What comes out of a gutter is wet, black and heavy. It goes in a bag and leaves with me, rather than sitting in a pile on your lawn until it kills the grass under it.

Usually one visit

Most houses in Whitfield are a morning’s work. You do not need to be in, and you do not need to move the car unless it is right under the run.

Worth knowing

How do you know your gutters need clearing?

You rarely see the blockage itself. You see what it does. Four signs, in the order people usually notice them.

Water spilling over the front edge

In heavy rain it should run to the downpipe, not curtain off the front of the gutter. If it sheets over, something is holding it back further along.

A green or dark streak down the wall

Water going over the edge instead of down the pipe runs onto the render week after week. The stain shows up long before the damp does.

Plants growing out of the gutter

Grass, moss, the odd sycamore seedling. If something is rooted up there, the gutter has been holding silt long enough to make soil.

A damp patch inside, upstairs

This is the expensive one. By the time water is coming through the wall, it has usually been going over the edge for a season or two.

Where I stop

I clear gutters, I don’t repair them. If a bracket has dropped, a joint is leaking or a length has sagged so it holds water permanently, I’ll tell you what I can see and you’ll want a roofer. Clearing a gutter that has come away from the fascia would be taking your money for nothing.

“He cleaned all the gutters, pvc fascia board, window and doors. He worked so hard, it’s been years since the PVC was cleaned. There wasn’t any pressure to have a regular window clean or contract.”

Questions

Before you ask

How much does gutter clearing cost?
It depends on the house — how long the run is, whether there is a conservatory or extension in the way, and how bad it has got. I would rather look than guess a number and change it when I arrive. Send a photo on WhatsApp or I will come and see it, and the quote is free either way.
How often should gutters be cleared?
Once a year suits most houses. If you have trees close by, or a north-facing roof that grows moss, make it twice. If you genuinely have nothing overhanging, you can often stretch it further — I will tell you honestly what yours looks like rather than booking you in for work you do not need.
When is the best time of year?
Late autumn, once the leaves are actually down, is the sensible one — it gets you clear before the winter rain. Spring works too if moss has built up over the wet months. Any time is better than the week after a damp patch appears.
Do you need to get on the roof?
No. A gutter vacuum on carbon poles reaches the gutter from the ground. Nobody walks on your roof, no ladder rests on the gutter or the render, and there is no working at height over your garden.
Do I need to be home?
Not usually. I need access round the outside and somewhere to park within reach of the run. If you are out, leave the side gate unlocked and I will let you know when it is done.
Will you clear the gutter above the conservatory?
Yes — that is exactly the sort of run a ladder struggles with, because you cannot lean anything against a conservatory roof. Reaching it from the ground is the reason the vacuum is worth having.
